NEED ADVICE, We are planning our spring trip to this area and would like to know some GOOD RV sites. I have been on the Internet looking and all look fine on the net. I notice that KOA has several CG's. However I would like to hear from someone who has stayed at different sites and get there feed back. I would like to hear good or bad comments. Our trip will be in May, so any weather comments are welcome also. Whistler Gulch is one other site we are looking at ,so any comments on this RVCG is welcome.

Thanks

Re: DEADWOOD/RAPID CITY SD

Hey Hollis, we have stayed at Chris' RV Park in Spearfish, SD and at Heartland RV Park in, Hermsoa, SD. The RV park in Spearfish was close to Deadwood and the RV park in Hermosa was kind of close to Rapid, City. They were both ok as far as I remember. hope that helps. Check them out on www.RVparkreviews.com. I didn't review them because we stayed there 2 or 3 years ago and it was before I started doing reviews.

I believe the Drill here, Drill now is dead in the water with the new political party. We will be lucky to have any fuel in a year or two. They just don't get it.

Hollis we stayed at the KOA in Spearfish and it was ok but nothing special. Site was clean and large and bathrooms were ok but that was in 2004 so it might have changed. We were there in July and the weather was hot and I do mean HOT. Lot of good things nearby and don't miss Deadwood. Great Casino in Deadwood and lots of history.

RE: DEADWOOD/RAPID CITY SD

Haven't stayed at a park yet but plan on getting up there next summer. I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB in Rapid City for 2 + years and I'll never forget the day I arrived, May 16th, 1966. I saw icicles extending from the roof of a 2 story barn, all the way to the ground. I think they were left over from the great blizzard about 8 weeks prior to my arrival. Here's a link to a neat picture from that blizzard from the NWS. http://nsidc.org/snow/gallery/blizzard_1966b.html

RE: DEADWOOD/RAPID CITY SD

Hi Hollis & Maria,

I'm sure you'll be fine in May. By the way, Spearfish, SD holds the world record for the fastest temperature change. On January 22, 1943, the temperature in Spearfish, SD was -4 °F and two minutes later the temperature was 45 ° above zero. The 49-degree rise in two minutes set a world record that still holds.

If you're into cold war history at all, there's a decommissioned Miniteman Missle Launch Control Facility on the way to the Black Hills if you come in from the East on I-90. It's operated by the National Park Service. It's near the Badlands National Park and Wall Drug (2 must see's). http://www.nps.gov/mimi/index.htm and http://www.walldrug.com/

Happy camping but bring your long johns just in case.

Hollis, make sure you stop at Wall, SD coming/going. The WALL DRUG is a fun place to see and eat a meal. If you have time take a tour of the Bad Lands Natl Park close by Wall, SD. There is a RV Park in Wall, but I can't remember what it was like.
