onan generators

i have a 7500 onan diesel gen. when you start it the starter stays engaged and you have to disconnect the solenoid wire . i have put anew starter on

Welcome to the forum Randy
Does the new starter do the same. I assume it does. Have you checked to see if voltage is still on the sol wire? sticking, bad start switch, wiring problems are some things to ck. Good luck and let us know what you find. Are your batteries fully charged? I have seen weak batt on cars cause this but dont ask me why because I never understood how this could cause a starter to stay engaged.

voltage stays on the solenoid wire and when disconnected the starter disengages but voltage still stays on the wire

I would suspect the start switch in this case. Start back tracking with the VOM.
