Transmission stepdown during long steep climbs

Actually, what occured during my trip up to Nova Scotia was, on long steep climbs up the mountains, the transmission failed to stepdown to a lower gear to make the climb easier. I talked to a number of people about that, but none had a solution, including Freightliner who would handle any warranty work on the RV. They talked about duplicating the situation, but that won't work around were I'm from. The hills are't long and steep enough. No, I didn't try to gear down manually. I actually made it to the top but with no additional acceleration.

Any Roadtrekers have the same problem?

Mine is a 2005 Sprinter with a Mercedes Turbo Deisel engine on a Freightliner chassis.

    Thanks in advance
