awning spring

I replaced the awning fabric and the casting top cap is no longer attached to the steel rod sticking out. After torquing the spring, and releasing to roll up, the spring unwinds because nothing in the cap is holding the rod in place. The 2 were rod and top cap came apart before, but now isn't...
