This past August I purchased a 2001 Coachmen with 24 valve 5.9 Cummins and 6 Speed Allison (manual handle slide shifter).
I just returned from a 5k mile round trip from Colorado to Florida. The coach only had 27K miles on it when I bought it and has run fine with the exception of some electrical issues. About 1,000 mi into the trip the "check trans" light came on. Ended up needing the gear position sensor replaced. Original symptom was the transmission would only shift as high as 3rd or 4th gear. Not long after I was back on the road the check trans light came on again but the transmission would shift through all its gears. Often it would struggle finding the higher gears, especially going up a grade and that's usually when the light would come on. It would always reset when I cycle the ignition off and then back on. It was a 31 day trip and there were a couple days where it didn't come on at all but I think it's gotten progressively worse. I know I'll need to take it to an Allison certified service center, but has anyone else experienced similar symptoms? Just not wanting to end up with an incompetent shop telling me I need a new or rebuilt transmission.
