Broken Axle

We have a 1982 Pace Arrow Class A 33'. The axle on the right rear twisted off "inside the hub". It has a 454 engine automatic and the brakes on the rear are disc. We are being told we have to replace the entire rear end. Can anyone help with the answer to this delima. At first we were told we could just replace the axle then someone else told us we have to replace the entire rear end. Hopefully one or some of you have an answer for us. Also if anyone has a coach they are not using anymore that would fit the bill for the rear end we would appreciate hearing from you as well.

I need to know exactly what broke. Is it the axle that runs inside the axle housing supplying power to the wheel, or is it the spindle that the wheel hub rides on that broke?
