Cargo Trailer Registration in Florida

Richard in Dunnellon, FL bought a Frontier Cargo Trailer in Georgia brand new in 2007. That company went out of business in 2008. The trailer has never been registered. He's kept the trailer on his property for storage only and now wants to put it on the road but has misplaced the original bill of origin. He has the bill of sale and a copy of the bill of origin, along with the VIN number and sales receipt. All of that is not enough for the State of Florida to allow him to register it.

Can any of you help out? Any ideas as to what he can do to get his trailer registered?

Thanks for your help. :)

Re: Cargo Trailer Registration in Florida

Cindy, the simplest way is to register the trailer as "Homemade". Not sure how the process would be in FL, but in VA, you go to the DMV and tell them what you want to do. They will give you a VIN plate that you have to attach to the trailer. A State Trooper will come out and inspect the trailer. If he passes it, you will get a Title with Homemade as the manufacture.

Thanks Ken. I suggested that to him but it's very apparent that it's not homemade so they won't allow him to do that. Any other ideas?

Hmmm, here looks do not matter, as long as you can prove it was not stolen. With all his paperwork, he should have no problem there.
I know a man who got a title for an OLD trailer. There is a company in Alabama that did a title for him and he then transfered it into VA. I will have to get more information on it and get back to you.

RE: Cargo Trailer Registration in Florida

You can register the trailer in Maine they are easy to work with they do not require title if under 3000lbs dry weight. So even if you think it is over 3000 empty simply tell them less they will send you everything needed simply do not tell them you are having issues. But that you would like to do a trailer registration it should cost you about $20 per year. You use your real address not a made up address in Maine but you home address. You will notice most semi trailers have Maine plates!!! . However they do not do RV's. They do Utility ,Horse,Cargo, Boat,Car Trailers. Again Very easy contact Maine DMV ask for trailer division and will walk you threw everything.

Register it as "salvage" ???

or
Register it in Alabama in your buddy's name. Sell it to yourself. Register it in FL. You will pay more in taxes or fees, but it will work.

Registering a trailer in Maine is a straightforward process, as they are accommodating and do not require a title if the trailer is under 3000 pounds dry weight. Even if you suspect the weight exceeds this limit when empty, you can simply inform them otherwise, and they will provide all necessary documentation without complications. It's essential not to disclose any issues but rather express an interest in trailer registration. The cost is approximately $20 per year, and you can use your real address, not a fictitious one, for registration. You may have noticed that many semi-trailers bear Maine plates. While Maine DMV handles various types of trailers such as utility, horse, cargo, boat, and car trailers, they do not handle RVs. Contacting the Maine DMV and asking for the trailer division will guide you through the registration process smoothly.
