Cooling fans on 454

Hi. I am new to the forum. I just purchased a 31' Mallard Sprinter. It is in nice shape and the engine sound good. There is one thing that I am not sure of. After I run it a few miles, 2 or 3, the engine sounds like it is running away. The tackometer doesn't change but it is really noisy. Then in a little bit it sounds normal again. Is this normal or do I have a problem?

I think it is normal. Probably sounds like a jet engine for a few minutes/seconds and then stops. It is a separate fan that is making this noise.

That is your fan clutch kicking in to add extra cooling power. Noisy as hell and they have a history of going bad on the 454.

Thanks for the reply. I had just about come to this conclusion. It was quite a start when I first heard it. I almost took it back..
