just was wondering if it's necessary to also drain the water heater when sanitizing a new freshwater tank?

I would sanitize the whole system. Is this a new rv or just a new tank? The whole system should be sanitized yearley IMO. Welcome to the forum.

I agree with Chelse - sanitize the whole system. I use calcium hypochlorite (swimming pool shock powder). It only takes a tablespoon full to sanitize my 40 gallon tank and all the lines, and it doesn't leave a strong chlorine smell and taste like bleach does. Hope this helps.
