Does anyone know of a book or website where I can get detailed information on mountain roads in the Western US? I'm looking for grades, elevations, distances; anything that would help prevent nasty surprises.
Use Good Sam's trip routing service, it inserts the referance number for any grade on the route. You will need the appropriate Mountain Grade book to look up the number if you want details.
