Oil in your Diesel?

OK maybe i will sound like a complete NOOB here but I've heard when your filling up a RV you need to add some type of oil additive to the diesel to lubricate your engine. Is this true? And would this not violate emissions standards in many places?

Re: Oil in your Diesel?

I add DieselKleen to my diesel. I even buy it at the dreaded WAL-MART. It increases my mileage (24 miles/gal) so I guess that's good. Now I can comply with the CAFE standards for truck mileage.

I'm sorry but GLOBAL WARMING stopped 10 years ago. I know the greenies just say it's hibernating for now. ;)

Re: Oil in your Diesel?

Several years ago the Diesel manufacturers (in an attempt to clean up the diesel fuel) and partly because of federal standards. began to reduce the amount of Sulfur in Diesel fuel. Once they did that the Railroad industry began to complain that their diesel locomotives were not running as long as they used to.....and some Truckers did the same. Their main complaint was injector pump life and cylinder wall ware.
Of course these were the heaviest users of diesel with thousands of hours on their engines....but the problem was real....
Sulfur has a lubrication quality and this new fuel was just not doing it for the big guys.
You have to understand that the average user (auto, RV, Tractor, boat, etc.) would not experience any difference , since they don't put that many hours on their engines.
Additives like (Marvel Mystery Oil) and the like were used by some to help lubricate cylinder walls and injector pumps and it can't hurt but is probably not necessary unless you are running a diesel locomotive.

It makes me feeeel gooood to add the crap. Diesel Kleen increases the lubricity and increases the cetane rating 6 points. It can't hurt. ;)

Now, now. My highway milage is 24 miles/gal at 60 mph. Pretty good for a heavy duty pickup if I do say so myself. Boy do it smell good. :bleh: :approve:

Well ,I really knew that was what you meant Dl but you know me Just had to rib you about it :) That is great milage and I would run the additives in the new fuel if I had a diesel. i run lucas in all my vehicles and automatic transmissions also. Probably not necessary but sure want hurt anything IMO

Re: Oil in your Diesel?

Hey Chelse, I'm going for Amsoil in my manual trans as soon as I can find a place that sells and installs it. Carson Dodge in Carson City, NV is where I'm headed if I don't find any place closer. Then I'm looking for a Banks 4 inch exhaust system. I have part 4 inch and part 3.5 inch exhaust now. All the newer Dodge Cummins have the full 4 inch exhaust. I suspect I can pick up a mile or more per gallon. Of course it will probably cost more than I'll ever recoup.

I know I would put the muffler back on. That stuff can't be good for the undercoating of your vehicle and some of the fumes might be getting back into the vehicle as well. Better check that out soon :)

Well I put the banks system on my MH with a super chip with headers and new tail pipe and all are 4" dia.. I did gain hp and get better GM. I spent 3600.00, so will I recoup it I don't think so. But what the hect I just feel better that I did it.

Hey Rod, luckily my Dodge (03) doesn't have a cat. In fact I can run a straight pipe on mine that isn't overly loud, but still has the 3.5 inch pipe restriction. It's cheaper than the Banks 4 inch exhaust with small muffler.

Hollis, I will feel better too if I get the Banks system. It's the young kid with dual pipes syndrom. I always had dual pipes on my HOT V-8's.

HEY DL I know what you are saying, it run in the family, my son has a Dodge Dakota that had a blower until the bottom of the engine blew out, now just a street rod. the Mh does have a good purr since I put the banks system on.

Hey Hollis, maybe we can have a drag race up a hill after I get my Banks exhaust. That way we won't break the speed limit and still have a drag. :bleh:
