Dear Folks,

What is the right thing to do to fix/reseal a separated rear seam on an RV (1989 Mallard Sprinter)? What does this kind of repair cost?

Thank you for responding.

Sincerely,

Is the Sprinter Alum. with a rubber roof? Acording to the type material you should be able to clean and go with whatever tape or chaulking your local rv center recommends. If it has actually seperated , you will probably have some internal structurial damage done from water leaks. Can be very costly to repair. :(

Dear Chelse,

Thanks for responding. :) The Sprinter (we think) is fiberglass, with an aluminum roof. The seam in question joins the side panel to the back panel. It has been caulked and duct taped but all that is coming undone. We can't afford expensive repairs, so I suppose we'll just have to recaulk it. How can you tell if there is water damage and how can you dry it out?

Thanks again.

Sincerely,

Jeanne

Jeanne, if there is water damage you should be able to find some soft or discolored spots inside in the general area of the seam. I generally take a sharp pointed knife and probe through the carpet in supected areas for soft wood. You may just be not getting enough of the old caulking off before appling the new or using the wrong kind. Duct tape is great stuff for temporary repairs but will not last long exposed to the weather. Still kind of curious as to just how big is the seperated seam. Most of the time major damage has occured before signs show.
