Travel through New York

I am traveling from Texas to Maine this summer. I plan on crossing New York on 90 from Buffalo to see my parents in upstate New York and then traveling on to Southern Maine. On my return trip I want to take 86 West instead of 90. Does anyone have any experience with this route? I try to avoid mountanous areas as I tow with a gas model and it takes its toll on my travel speed. I would like to hear any advice from anyone experienced on this route.....thanks!!

The hills are not as bad as say I77 is through the Virgina's but it does have some hills to deal with. If you're that concerned about the grades then I would suggest just sticking with I90
