Hi

My family and I, (wife, 4 kids aged 7 - 16) will be renting an RV strating in Albuquerque and heading west. We'll have about four weeks and would like suggestions for good places to stay, things to see etc. More outdors/scenery/culture oriented than theme parks/casinos etc. We've a few obvious things on the list - Grand Canyon, Yosemite, San Francisco. Any thoughts or suggestions? Things that must be seen, even if not in the usual obvious top ten?

Thanks,

David W

Going west from Albuquerque you will likely be on I40. Just off that highway is the Petroglyph National Monument and, in Arizona, the meteor crater monument. As for the Grand Canyon, there is a RV park (Canyon Gateway, I think) about 30 miles past the Flagstaff exit. They are Passport America members so very reasonable. And they are (or at least used to be) affiliated with Marvelous Marv's Canyon tour. The best and most hassle free way to see the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, and there is a substantual discount if booked through the RV park. Or the town just south of the RV park has a train to the canyon if you prefer to 'do it yourself'. I haven't gone any further west, sorry.

South of Flagstaff on I17, there is Sedona/Red Rocks. Very pretty, I'm told, but not RV friendly.

If you want to go through Tucson (perhaps coming back on I10, then north on I25 back to Albuquerque), there is the Arizona-Sonora Desert museum, with all the plants, animals, reptiles, insects etc from the region, the Pima Air Museum (airplanes) and Pima Missile museum (missile silo). Also old west tourist stuff.

Reservations for Yosemite can be hard to come by. If you plan to be there in June you must make your reservation in FEBRUARY! The reservation phone line opens at 7am (pacific time) on the 15th of the month and nearly all spots are gone within a half an hour!
