guidance to a US RV virgin

hi Guy
Could someone give me some guidance, my son and I are renting an RV for the first time to drive Route 66 (although we are ending in Vegas rather than LA).
Due to circumstances we have a shorter period than originally planned so the distance we do each day is variable but longer than planned.

So we don’t know where we will end up each day on the route.

Can you help, if the trip is early April (but after Easter) how easy is it to just turn up at Campsites without booking or do you always have to book?

if you have to book how late in each day would you recommend making a booking?

Thanks in advance
Steve

They can fill up fast, but not in remote places. Earlier in the day the better to reserve.
Honestly, why Route 66? You can see pavement at home. There is nothing special about it other than people talk about it, is just a road. I suggest to go see the sights, not a road. There are way way way way way way better things to see than Route 66.
You could spend all your time just in Utah for example.
Drive the Million Dollar highway in CO, then to Grand Junction, then into Utah to Arches and then head south for many many may national parks ALL of which blow Route 66 out of the water on any day ever.
